VLOG PRESENTATION
Assignment 1 - Purpose of Music Videos
In this report i am going to discuss where people watch music videos today and how that has changed in recent times, how music videos increase the income for record company, and how music videos are used to promote a particular song, album, a new artist or promotion of an artist’s change in musical direction, and synergies with another media sector.
How people watch/consume music videos today
Today, the most popular way to view music videos is through Youtube. Since it's breakthrough in 2005, music videos from almost every artist whether they are contemporary or from decades ago have been uploaded to the site. According to Business Insider UK, the one with the most views is currently Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" which has 5.6 billion views. They are also free for anyone to view, and all of these points indicate how Youtube is the easiest, most accessible way to view music videos today. The first ever way to view music videos was to watch them on TV, and the first ever one to be broadcast on the TV was "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles which was broadcast on MTV and would go on to make history. TV music channels can still be watched today, and MTV has multiple music channels which are the most popular, however there are many others such as Kerrang! which was launched in 2001 and broadcast only rock music videos from hundreds of artists of that genre.
How music videos have increased the income for a record company
Some artists and bands have created their own record labels, and because a lot of the money made goes to the record labels anyway, this means the money earned for each music video they make goes directly to the artist/band. Some even included the record label's logo in the video, for example in the video for An example of this is Rolling Stones records which was created in 1970 by The Rolling Stones, it was however discontinued in 1992 when the band signed to a new record label.
How they are used to promote a particular song
The music video for "Girls" by The 1975 promotes that particular song by the band. This is due to the fact that they decided in the video to have the members who are all male to be swapped to female in some shots and they are wearing typically girly outfits and acting in a girly way, to make it fit with the song title and lyrics.
How they are used to promote and album
In the music video for "Do I Wanna Know" by the Arctic Monkeys, it features only an animated white line in front of a black background. Although the line changes shape throughout the video it starts off looking exactly like the album cover for "AM" that the song is on, which is a white wave frequency on a black background, so this was a clear promotion to the album.
How they are used to promote a new artist or change in musical direction of an artist
Beyonce's music video for "Crazy In Love" was very successful in promoting the new direction she wanted to take her music career. This is clear because this was the first music video she made since starting her solo career and leaving Destiny's Child. She acts way more energetic than her fans have ever known her and gave everyone a first look into her new on-stage persona "Sasha Fierce".
How they are used to promote a synergy with another media sector
The music video for "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea is a synergy to the film "Clueless". This is because in the video she is playing the role of the lead character, Cher, and Charlie XCX who also features in the song and video plays another character, Tai. As well as dressing up, they recreate some of the school, party and truck scenes form the film.
Summary
In conclusion, I believe that Youtube will continue to evolve and will be one of the only ways people will watch music videos in future as the internet has grown so much since the release of the first music video. In relation to that, there is a chance music TV channels may not be around for that much longer as people in this generation prefer using the internet to watching tv.
