Developing Ideas
Initial Response
Cameron Douglas - you make me high
Music genre
The genre of the song is RnB. This is due to the fairly soft piano melodies and beats which play along side a male rapper. An example of another RnB song that is similar to this in style would be Blue Lights by Jorja Smith.
Style
The style of music video that this song would mostly fit under is the Popular Music genre, this being because in many RnB videos the artist or others in the video are seen lip syncing to the song, especially if the song includes rap, and RnB and Pop genres are becoming more intertwined in recent times. One example of a video that includes this is The Hills by The Weeknd.
Length
4 minutes (the song’s duration runs over 4 minutes)
Pace
The song overall has a fairly slow pace with the instrumentation but the vocals (which are rapped) are fast, so for the video I would want to cut to the beat with a mixture of fast and slow cuts to make it more visually interesting and fit the beat of the song.
Meaning
From listening to the song and lyrics, the main meaning and themes i'd like the audience to receive from the video are about growing up or becoming/being an average young adult in Britain, and possibly the struggles teens and young adults face as their lives change. This would also make the video Illustrative in style as I would like it to include people of that age representing what it's like. The artist of the song is also a young adult which means the video can show lyric interpretation as the artist would relate to the people in the video.
Imagery
In my music video for this song, I want a group young adults (aged around 16-18) to be an important focus, and they would be walking around the streets of an urban area showcasing their day to day life when they’re out together. I would also include other shots of normal urban situations, for example, cars driving down roads or busy areas with shops, and these shots would be natural and unstaged to showcase the reality of what goes on in urban areas. To make the video fit the Popular Music genre I would have some or all of the people included in the video lip syncing some of the words. I would also wish to have the video in a black and white filter, most likely throughout the whole video.
Semiotics
The Preferred response that I’d like the video to receive is that people will watch and understand or possibly be able to relate to the activities that the young people do in the video, and respect how an average group of young people view their own lives by how they choose to be represented in the video. For example, how they would want to have fun when going out and obviously don’t wish to cause harm to anybody. However the Opposed response of the video could possibly be that the young people are still viewed negatively or viewed maybe as useless pr unhelpful to society by what people see, which could be supported by someone's negative view of young people already (maybe from other media products) before watching the video.
